Q. What is Zona Plus?

Zona Plus is a computer-controlled device for the treatment of hypertension. It takes the user through an isometric therapy session that is clinically proven to lower blood pressure. It fits easily into the palm of your hand.

Q. Who can benefit from Zona Plus therapy?

It is generally recognized that most people can improve their overall health with relaxation and exercise. Isometric exercise has shown to be particularly effective in reducing blood pressure. In clinical studies, 9 out of 10 patients have seen significant blood pressure drops.

Zona Plus is also easy to use and safe. There are no known negative side effects. Young or old, early stage or severe hypertension, medicated or not, nearly everyone could use and benefit from Zona Plus.

Q. How soon will I see results?

Most users see noticeable results after 6-8 weeks. Some can see results as early as 4 weeks, in rare cases it can take 12 weeks and longer. Zona Plus therapy actually improves your cardiovascular health and it takes time to strengthening your body's response mechanism. That is why you will see virtually no changes to your resting blood pressure for weeks before seeing a sudden drop.

Q. How much time does the Zona therapy take?

Because the Zona therapy is patented set of prolonged squeezes calibrated to your individual physiology, you only have to do it five times a week. Each session takes only 12 minutes a day. The battery-powered Zona Plus is completely portable, so you are completely flexible where and when you want to do your therapy sessions.

Q. Are the effects of Zona Plus long lasting?

Just as with other forms of treatment or exercise, the beneficial effects of Zona Plus will slowly disappear if you discontinue use.

Q. What happens if I miss a session?

The Zona therapy fits your lifestyle. If you happen to miss a day because of your busy schedule, just use the device the next day. The most important concept for your health is that you perform the therapy at least 5 times a week. You are completely flexible when and where you perform your therapy session.

Q. Can't I squeeze a ball or ordinary handgrip and get the same effect?

No. The Zona Plus is a computer monitored, individually configured therapy. The device uses real-time regulating protocols to guide you through a calibrated and safe exercise level which is optimized to your specific physiology. There is a narrow target window that amplifies the healing effects of the isometric therapy while keeping it at safe levels at all times for all patients.

Q. Can't I improve my cardiovascular health/fitness with aerobic exercise?

Yes! Aerobic exercise - running, biking, etc. - is good for you and we encourage you to continue doing it. The magic about the Zona Plus is how well it works and how easy it is to integrate into your daily schedule. With the compact, battery-powered Zona Plus, you can exercise quietly, anywhere, anytime. No additional equipment, no "warming up," no special attire.

Q. Why is compliance so high with Zona Plus?

Because it works for most patients, which see their elevated blood pressure levels coming down. Also, it is a relatively low stress, low impact and convenient therapy compared with other lifestyle changes. And, Zona Plus Series 3 comes with a cloud based therapy tracking and monitoring app, that helps you to stay on track. Your doctor can use the same app to see your progress and help you improve your therapy.

Q. When the green On/Off button is pressed, why does the display flash the low battery symbol and then turn off? (Series 2 only)
  • Replace the battery (see Preparing the Zona Plus for Use in the "Zona Plus Series 2 User’s Guide".)
Q. Why doesn't the device turn on when I press the on button? (Series 2 only)
  • Make sure you are holding the button for at least 3 seconds.
  • Check that the battery is correctly installed in the device and that the battery housing is closed.
  • After 4-6 months use, you may need to replace the battery.
Q. Why has the device stopped responding? (Series 2 only)
  • The battery housing may be loose.
  • Make sure the battery housing is secure and firmly in place (see Preparing the Zona Plus for Use in the "Zona Plus Series 2 User's Guide".)
Q. Why does the device turn off before I have finished the entire isometric therapy sequence? (Series 2 only)
  • Be sure to pay attention to instructions displayed on the Zona Plus screen. The device will turn itself off to conserve the battery if it has not been used within 60 seconds from the beginning of a therapy step.
  • Make sure the battery is properly installed (see Preparing the Zona Plus for Use in the "Zona Plus Series 2 User's Guide".)
  • Try restarting the therapy session.
  • Replace the battery if the device still shuts off.
  • If you are unable to resolve the issue, please contact Zona Health.
Q. Do physicians approve of Zona Plus therapy?

Zona Plus has demonstrated its effectiveness in clinical trials and with thousands of satisfied patients in the USA. Many physicians who are familiar with the Zona Plus have adopted Zona Plus as one of their options to treat hypertension. Your doctor might not be familiar with it so print the one page summary document located on the "What is the Zona Plus?" page to introduce the Zona Plus to your doctor at your next visit.

Q. Can more than one person use the Zona Plus?

Yes! Two people can use the Zona Plus™. Both devices calibrate themselves at the start of therapy to ensure that the therapy is optimized for the current user.

Q. How long will the Zona Plus last?

The Zona Plus has been designed with an active lifestyle in mind. You will have many years of use with the device. We offer a 2 year guarantee which covers all mechanical and electrical defects due to component failure during the course of normal usage.

Q. Does the Zona Plus come with a satisfaction guarantee?

Yes! We are so sure you'll be satisfied with the Zona Plus, we guarantee it. If, after 12 weeks of use as directed, you are not completely satisfied, you can return the Zona Plus and get a refund.

Q. Is Zona Plus for me if I have already been able to reduce my blood pressure to normal levels around 120/80 mmHg with medication?

Yes, healthy lifestyle choices are generally advisable. It is always beneficial to train and strengthen your cardiovascular system with the Zona Plus therapy. With Zona Plus and in consultation with your physician you might be able to reduce your medication.

Talk to your doctor and discuss with him the opportunity to reduce your hypertension medication after you have been on Zona Plus therapy for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Here is why: After 8 weeks you have strengthened your cardiovascular system. But, even though you trained your cardiovascular regulators with Zona Plus, these mechanisms do not jump into full action until your resting blood pressure levels are trying to creep up. Thus, you will not observe the blood pressure lowering effect of the Zona Plus until you adjust your medication with the help of your doctor. Once you start reducing your medications, you might see your blood pressure staying at normal levels.

Please note: You should never adjust your medication without the prior direction of your doctor to do so.

Q. What do I do if my blood pressure levels have not come down after 12 weeks?

It depends:

You could be a late responder and just need more time. This is rare but we have had patients that responded after 14 weeks. We encourage you to continue using Zona Plus. Just contact us and we will be happy to extend your 12 weeks satisfaction guarantee.

You could have applied the therapy incorrectly. Contact us and our friendly staff will review your therapy scores and help you improve your exercise.

You are a medicated, controlled hypertensive with resting blood pressure in the normal range of 120/80 mmHg: Zona Plus therapy will not show significant effects until you adjust your medication. Talk to your doctor and discuss with him the opportunity to reduce your hypertension medication.

Please note: You should never adjust your medication without the advice of your doctor.

Your blood pressure readings are unreliable and hence do not show any consistent trend. Make sure you follow the guidelines for accurate blood pressure measurements as published by www.hochdruckliga.de. Sometimes single blood pressure measurements are not sufficient and a 24 hour blood pressure reading might reveal your actual blood pressure elevation. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist on how to best attain a reliable reading.

You are one of the few patients who do not respond to the Zona Plus therapy. We regret that Zona Plus could not provide relieve to your high levels of blood pressure, but, we stand by satisfaction guarantee. Contact us to schedule a return and to collect your refund.

Q. I experience sustained soreness in my lower arms.

Initial soreness right after a therapy session is normal and should subside within a few minutes.

Initial sustained soreness is also normal for the first few days after starting the Zona Plus Therapy. To be effective, the Zona Plus therapy takes effort. As any untrained muscle, your lower arms will have to get used to the exercise. This might take a few days, but sustained muscle soreness should entirely subside within a week after starting the Zona Plus Therapy.

If you experience sustained soreness for more than a week, you are probably applying too much force when you calibrate the Zona Plus to your maximum strength. Try to lower your maximum force and see if the soreness subsides.

If all of the above measures do not provide relieve and you continue to experience sustained soreness, consult with your doctor to find out what is causing it.

Q. My blood pressure levels are slightly elevated but not seriously enough for my doctor to recommend taking medication. Is it beneficial for me to use Zona Plus?

Yes it is. You might be able to reduce your elevated blood pressure levels into normal ranges and avoid or delay your blood pressure levels creeping up into ranges that require medication.

Q. Can I increase the effectiveness of the Zona Plus therapy by doing multiple sessions a day?

No, the Zona Plus therapy is designed to trigger the blood pressure lowering effect with one therapy session a day, 5 times a week. Increasing this schedule will not result in significantly lower blood pressure levels.

Q. I have difficulty scoring at least 80, what should I do?
  • The score is a measure of your ability to squeeze at the target level ("HOLD") for the required amount of time.
  • The force sensor on the Zona Plus can detect even small changes in the squeeze force. If your scores are below 80, even though you are staying within the "HOLD," zone for much of the isometric therapy session, try squeezing a bit harder. As long as the display shows "HOLD," it’s better to squeeze more than less.
Q. I have trouble performing the isometric therapy session. Am I doing something wrong?
  • Be patient. Zona Plus should get easier to use with continued use.
  • If you experience hand soreness, fatigue, discomfort, or other symptoms, stop using the Zona Plus and contact your healthcare professional. Resume use of the Zona Plus only as recommended by your healthcare professional.
Q. Is the Zona Plus similar to the RESPeRATE product?

No, based upon clinical research the Zona Plus™ is much more effective at lowering blood pressure. The independent British Hypertension Society recently reviewed RESPeRATE's studies and published this alert: In the opinion of the BHS, such small effects over very short durations of time do not provide sufficient evidence for this equipment to be recommended. Q. Why do I not see the 4 character registration code with I plug my Zona device into my computer?

Typically if you plug the Zona Plus device into your computer for the first time and do not get the 4 character registration code it is because you have not yet installed the Zona software or that the Zona software is not currently running on your computer. If you are using a PC running Windows, the System Tray will have the Zona icon visible if the Zona software is currently running. This icon is a green sphere with a heartbeat symbol in the center. If you see the icon, verify that the software is still running by placing your mouse cursor over the icon. You should see "Zona" and the version you have installed. If the icon disappears it means that it has quit running and you might have an issue with your installation.

If you do not see the Zona icon verify that you have actually installed the software. The default install location is c:\program files (x86)\Zona\ZonaTherapy.

On Apple computers the software installs as ZonaPlus in the Applications folder.

Q. Why does my Zona Plus 3.0 display "syncing..." at the end of each therapy?

The Zona device is looking for a valid Bluetooth LTE connection to the Zona server. This is a feature that is not yet supported but will allow for synchronizing with the secure Zona server via a Bluetooth LTE connection instead of using the USB cable.

Q. Why does my screen go dark when I click some buttons such as "Enter Blood Pressure" or "Register Zona Plus" in the "My Therapy" zone on the Zona Health website?

The functionality used to place a new form over the parent form is not supported in Internet Explorer version 8 and older. The solution is to use a browser such as Chrome or Firefox or upgrade your Internet Explorer browser to version 9 or later.

Q. Why does the data upload not work for my Mac?

Check that you are running OS X 10.7 or later. Apple no longer supports earlier versions of the operating system.

If you are running 10.7 or later and have downloaded and installed the Zona Plus application, verify that the application is running. If it is stop and restart the application and try again.
